Ladies, we all know that at times our male counterparts can be a bit clueless. And not just in the “sorry-honey-I-forgot-to-put-the-toilet-seat-down” kind of way. But in the well-intentioned “I just don’t know what women want for Christmas” kind of way! Lately, I feel like I’ve been the “go-to girl” for helpless guys on the loose in the stores!
It started with a slightly panicked call from my father, who was out shopping for a present from my mother. The stakes are high this year, and he has to do serious damage control, since last year he presented her with a flannel robe and slippers! I wish I were kidding…I’m surprised they are still married! I told dad to stay put and we could meet at Starbucks for coffee to come up with a game plan.
Dad knew he had some serious ground to cover, so I told him the most appropriate gift would be diamonds. (By the way my mom is not an expert in the art of subtlety! She’s been dropping hints about diamonds in front of my dad left and right since Thanksgiving!) I know many men may be in this position, and after being married so long it can be hard to come up with a perfect gift. But, trust me; you can never go wrong with diamonds! Not only do they express long-lasting love and commitment, they make a woman feel so special and fabulous. After I finished my peppermint chocolate latte, we decided to start the search for the perfect diamond present. Once we got to Jared’s, we found a gorgeous and irresistible five-stone eternity ring. Perfection for a woman he’s loved for eternity! I hope I get a ring like that brilliant and beautiful one from Right once we’ve hit the 30-year marriage mark. But right now, I’m happy to show off my brilliant Leo diamond engagement ring! As I told Dad, you can get your wife that gorgeous scarf she’s been eyeing from Hermes for her birthday—Christmas and Hanukah are the times to pull out all of the stops!
After I was done with dad, I was ready to go home and curl up into bed to avoid the cold weather and put on a chick flick (along the lines of Sweet Home Alabama) when I got a call on my Treo from Right’s friend Tommy. He was desperate for a Hanukkah gift for his girlfriend. With so much pressure from the eight days of gifts, he wanted the last one to be the clincher—something to take her breath away! Again, I told him diamonds would be the perfect gift, but he needs to know something about diamonds before he puts his money down! I directed him to this handy guide to buying diamonds that he can download from the net.
After my day of helping out the men in my life, I couldn’t help but wonder who Right would be calling on to help with my Christmas gift. There are plenty of people he could rely on (like my sister, the Diamond Diva, in case my hints for a three-stone diamond pendant weren’t clear enough. (In case your men are in the same position as the men in my life—I’d suggest talking to your girlfriends and pointing out the diamond ear studs that you’ve had your eye on!
But, while I think it’s easy enough to get us women presents, I’m under the belief that it is much harder to shop for your man. I’m lucky, Right’s not very picky and he is happy with any gift he gets—clothes, sports tickets, you name it he’ll like it. But I wanted to get him a really special gift as this is our last Christmas before we’re married, so I decided to go with a watch, since he’s been wearing the same plain leather timepiece since I met him. That way he’ll know it’s always time for diamonds!
